I can only somewhat convey the magnificence, eerie-ness and awe of this place. It's a cave at the bottom of a mountain, that you hike down to, and swim in a "pool" of chilly fresh water. There are warning signs not to go down, but on Kauai, no one takes those things seriously.
We are heading down to that black hole. It's at the foot of a mountain.
The darkness is where the water is.
Here is the view from inside the cave, looking up through the "opening" we hiked down.
Alaka'i and Jacob are heading into the water. It's chilly, dark and scary!
The first notable trait about this swim is the temperature of the water. Cold! Also notable is the top of the cave curving overhead, and the gentle pitter of water drops that are constantly dripping from the rock, and into the pool. Beyond that slight noise, it is very, very silent and dark. Once your eyes adjust, you can see the edge of the cave across the pool, and can swim over, if you dare. I find the entire experience frightening, but I do it anyway because it's thrilling! Also worth mentioning is that the water, as you can tell, is crystal clear!
Our swim is complete and we are heading back out!
Way to go, Alaka'i!
